A Peanut Issue

As I alluded to in my last post about the lake, we had a little issue while we were there. It all stems from one little word: PEANUT.

You may recall or know from reading this blog or ever being around us and food: Stokes has 2 allergies - egg and peanut. We do our best to avoid them all together and I try to check all labels before he's allowed to eat anything.

When we went to the lake last month, we brought all of our own groceries and food and our recipes to cook and eat there so we didn't have to go out and we could spend all of our time at the lake. One thing I noticed was that the Nanas brought a movie theatre box of Butterfinger Bites candy. I noticed the box and saw that it contained peanuts (it's not an obvious offender though so it would be easy to miss) and put the box into the cabinet, where I felt sure Stokes will leave it be. I didn't bring any potty treats for #2s (yes, I still am doing that!) so I gave a few Bites to William when he used the potty at one point. Stokes must have noticed without me realizing.

One morning while we were there, I was in the shower and the boys were upstairs playing. When I got out of the shower, Stokes came in the bathroom and I immediately noticed that he had hives around his mouth and I got suspicious. When he's had hives like that in the past, it's because he has eaten an allergen. When I asked him what he'd eaten, he told me that he hadn't eaten anything. I immediately gave him a dose of Benadryl and went upstairs where they had been playing to investigate. I didn't see anything suspicious or out of the ordinary, but when I asked Stokes again, he responded that he just drank water and didn't eat anything. He wasn't acting strange at all, it was just the hives that had me concerned.

When I asked William about what Stokes had eaten, the truth finally came out. William spilled the beans that Stokes had eaten a Butterfinger Bite. I was honestly a bit surprised that he had gone in to the cabinet and gotten them. We have a child safety lock on our pantry at home, so we don't have these kinds of issues.

I realized that he had eaten something containing peanuts, I think for the first time ever, and I was a bit shaken up. I didn't know how his body would respond and what I should do. I had left his Epi-Pen at home - stupid mistake. We have one but don't typically travel with it because he's never had a bad reaction before. I always travel with Benadryl though! I learned that lesson and Epi-Pen will be coming with us from now on.

Anyway, I wasn't sure what to do, but didn't think we needed to go to the ER since the hives was the only reaction as far as I could tell. I think Stokes could tell that I was worried, which made him start to get worried. He was breathing fine, which was a huge relief. I called his pediatrician, but had to leave a message and wait for a call back. In the meantime, I was holding him and making sure he was doing OK.  The hives appeared to be spreading down his throat and onto his chest and back. I called Thomas at work and FaceTimed him so he could see Stokes and make any other suggestions for what to do. While I was on the phone with Thomas, Stokes vomited all over. It was a mess, but I was thinking that it was probably a good thing that his body took the initiative to get the allergen out. But I didn't know whether this meant that he was going downhill, or that the worst was over. I also wasn't sure if I should re-dose the Benadryl and whether any had gotten in to his system before he vomited. Instead of giving him another dose, I played it safe and decided to wait for the pediatrician to call me back and just to keep a close eye on him. I was prepared to go to the ER immediately if I noticed anything getting worse.

By the time the pediatrician called back, I was on a work conference call (note in the last post about the struggle of trying to work AND be at the lake - not great) and missed the call and thus began the extended game of phone tag with the nurse. I was keeping an eye on Stokes and after the vomit, he bounced back feeling just fine. No breathing issues still, and the hives were starting to fade.

We went about our day as if everything was just fine and Stokes seemed to be alright. By the time the pediatrician's office and I finally connected on the phone, we were out on the boat hanging out at the dock. Stokes seemed to be 100% back to himself and my concern had lessened drastically. I told her the whole situation and that I didn't have the Epi-Pen with me. The nurse at the ped did recommend that we come in for an appointment. I explained that we were 1.5 hours away at the lake and she suggested that we needed to go to an urgent care nearby to get him checked out. I asked whether he was in the clear since it had been several hours and his symptoms had gone away by that point and he was acting totally normal. She told me that the reaction could still occur for hours after the incident and that we needed to continue to monitor him closely all that evening and into the night.

Right after that call, Stokes and I got off the boat and headed directly to the urgent care facility in Seneca, which is about 20 minutes away. We had to wait in their waiting room for about 45 minutes and finally got to be seen by the doctor. I explained everything that had happened, and they took Stokes's temperature and heart rate, looked in his ears and mouth, then pronounced that he was fine and sent us on our way.

I'm SO relieved that this turned out to not be a huge deal. It definitely had me very worried. I learned my lesson about several things - put all peanut/egg items away and out of reach (do not assume he won't get in them), and always have the Epi-Pen with us. Had I had the Epi-Pen, I would have used it and that was what the pediatrician recommended. Lesson learned and thank goodness this ended OK for all of us!

*Being that it's Halloween and the boys will go trick-or-treating tonight, it's especially timely that I'm writing this post. So much of the Halloween candy contains peanuts...or is made in a facility that processes peanuts. For those reading this post - please be aware! So many kids have allergies and this is dangerous. Example - plain M&Ms don't contain peanuts but are in a peanut facility. That's why we had to use Skittles for potty training treats. Make sure you know if your own kids have allergies and do not give anyone else's kid permission to eat anything without checking with the parents! It can be very well-intentioned, but not safe.  I've told Stokes over and over again that he is NOT allowed to eat any Halloween candy without asking me first. My warning to him does not necessarily mean that he will listen and obey. While we're walking with 3 kids and a million distractions are going on, how easy would it be for him to pull out a bite sized Snickers from his bag and tear into it before I can turn around?!?!?! Tonight will be scary for me and it doesn't have anything to do with costumes or decorations.  I will have to try to watch him like a hawk. My protective allergy mom sense will be on high alert tonight!!!!

Can you see the redness and hives around his mouth, jaw and chin?

Pitiful
Notice the hives on his neck

A little redness in his eyes, too

Lake with the Nanas, part 2

I'm not sure if this is an annual tradition just yet, but we went to Carole's lake house last year (see post here) and then went again this year. Carole gave me a few dates when she had the house and no one was planning to use it. I cross-checked with my aunts/the Nanas to see if they were available and wanted to come. We landed on the last week in September.  When we picked the week, it was a little iffy on weather. We weren't sure if it would be cold, whether we'd have a tropical storm, whether it'd be nice and sunny and warm - in September, you could get any of the above. We totally lucked out with really warm, summer-like weather!

We didn't want to pull Ryan away from his special needs school, because he would have missed his therapy sessions for the week, so I just took Stokes and William to the lake with me. Thomas stayed home to work and kept Ryan and got him to and from school each day. I, incidentally, worked at the lake, but realized that I should have taken PTO. It was too stressful to try to take care of the boys and get all my work done, especially with it being the end of the quarter.

Anyway, we stayed at the lake Tuesday - Thursday. My aunts got there on Tuesday afternoon. We floated around in the lake and had fun. I don't know how to do the boat, and didn't want to mess with it on my own, but once Carole got there on Wednesday, we got to go out on some boat rides. My aunts LOVED coming to the lake again and it's such a special time for them to get to spend some quality time with the boys in such a fun and relaxed setting.

*We had one little incident that I will do a separate post about. Stay tuned...

4 year well check

I was dreading this appointment because I had heard from friends that the 4 year well check has....duh, duh, duh (scary music sound)...SHOTS. All of the other appointments with shots happened so long ago that they boys didn't remember and didn't have any fear of going to the doctor. They actually really liked going to the doctor. At times, they would actually make up not feeling well and tell me that they needed to go to the doctor! I knew this appointment would come as a shock to them.

Pre-shots, just waiting around...

They each got several shots - I think 3 or 4 each!

Ryan even had to get an extra immunization from one that he missed out on in the past due to medications. Poor guy!

At least the nurses come in with everything ready to go and make it as quick as possible. The problem was that they were all in the same room and saw what happened to a brother or 2 before it happened to them. Panic was rising! Everyone was freaking out! There were lots of screams and tears. Stokes wasn't able to bounce back very quickly, but William and Ryan were fine after a few seconds.

Post-shots
(Stokes was still being held)
Showing me their muscles since they were so brave!
Stokes will still grumpy

Still now, even just for little sick visits, they will ask me if they're getting a shot. It's pitiful and makes me sad!

Along with the shots, we also got updated growth charts. And guess what - we still have little guys. The pediatrician said that by the time they turn 2 or 3, they will start showing their height if they're destined to be tall. That's not a hard and fast rule though and I still have faith that these 3 guys will be big and tall like their Daddy! Thomas's doctor said that he would only be 5'9" and he ended up 6'2"!

Updated stats:

Stokes

  • Weight - 29 lbs, 6.4 oz (3rd percentile)
  • Height - 3'2" (7th percentile)
  • BMI - 14.31 (9th percentile)
Ryan
  • Weight - 31 lb, 3.2 oz (9th percentile)
  • Height - 3'1.4" (3rd percentile
  • BMI - 15.68 (52nd percentile)
William
  • Weight - 31 lb, 3.2 oz (9th percentile)
  • Height - 3' 2.78" (16th percentile)
  • BMI - 14.59 (16th percentile)
We're continuing to push for good, healthy and filling dinners. Yes, I could let them eat lots and lots of dessert and treats to get their weight up, but I don't want to start poor eating habits this early and create a lifelong battle for them with healthy nutrition. We're adding in Pediasure to Stokes's daily diet in the hopes that it will help him put some weight on. He's all lean muscle - not an ounce of fat. And trust me, he's very strong!

I'm still so preoccupied with their numbers and stats. You'd think 4 years after leaving the NICU I wouldn't be so concerned with all this stuff. They're all healthy! Count my blessings! I guess I will just always have that preemie/NICU mentality. It also feels a little bit like a mom fail that they aren't in the middle of the charts by now. Both Thomas and I are within normal/average range I think! Since the boys aren't there, I feel like I'm not doing enough to help them get big and strong. I know it's in my head and God's plan is what's in store for them, size-wise and with everything, but when I hear those percentiles, I feel like I've failed them a little. Their doctor did not seem too concerned, however, so we'll just keep on keeping on. But also...grow, babies, grow!!!!

NICU Reunion - 2017

Our NICU hosts a reunion party each fall and invites all the graduates to come back. We missed the reunion last year due to some conflict (can't remember) but were excited to get back this year! We were also able to coordinate with our NICU friends, the Alexanders, to meet them there and then grab dinner afterwards.

The awesome thing about this reunion this year is that they hosted it at the Children's Museum! We've only taken the boys to the museum one time ever so this was a special treat! We had the whole museum (I think) and got to play all around and have so much fun. The entrance and food area was really crowded, so we didn't stay long there and didn't eat anything, but we did run in to our favorite neonatologist (Dr. Ohning) but didn't get a chance to chat with him because he was understandably in high demand there, and we also got to see the Welsh triplets/family, some of the boys' twin friends from school, and a few other people that we recognized.

The boys and Grant played and played, basically until it was time to shut down and end the party. Inside the museum we saw some other families we knew (The Williams, my neighbor Kristen & kids, a friend from soccer, a high school friend of mine that manages the NICU staff now, and two of our favorite nurses - Kathleen and Mary Ellen). In terms of connecting and visiting with people, I'd say it was a success!

One of the highlights for me (other than seeing so many familiar faces) was Ryan in the wind tunnel. He LOVED it! Check out this proof...

Wind is starting to pick up...

JOY!

Pure bliss!
And I wish you could "hear" it because
he was cracking up!

Wind dying back down

Admittedly, I didn't do very well with taking pictures and didn't get any with cute Grant in them! After the reunion, we grabbed dinner at Wild Wing Cafe with Grant, Bonnie and Brian. When we were trying to pick a place, they mentioned that Grant loves wings. He's a kid after my own heart. Our boys have never tried wings, and probably don't even know what they are, so I was impressed/tickled that Grant loved them! We had a fun dinner and enjoyed hanging out with that family so very much. We just recently hung out with them again...post coming soon!

So the NICU Reunion 2017 was a great success. I hope that they will do it again at the Museum in the future. It's so educational and entertaining for the kids! My only regret about the party was not getting to see and chat with more of the people I saw at the entrance that was so crowded...and not taking more pictures of the boys with their buddy. I'm thankful to the NICU for continuing to host this event year after year. It's nice and comforting (and fun, in a weird way) to come back with our emotional scars that are still healing, and be among a lot of people with the same scars. We're all in this collective group together. Prayers for all the current NICU babies and families out there right now...

One of our faves

Fifi is so reliable and awesome and good to help us out. Whenever one of us is traveling or if we want to do something fun over a weekend and need help with the boys, she's one of the first people that we will call and ask for help. She stayed with Thomas and the boys for a whole work week while I had to travel to Irvine, CA in mid-September and then stayed through the weekend so that Thomas and I could take Stokes and William to the Clemson game and Ryan could stay home with her and Jerry. She truly is one of our (and the boys's) faves!

Before she left on Sunday, I insisted that we get a few pics of her and the guys while they were ready for church! I think it's cute that they were coordinated. :)

We love this lady right here. Shout out to Fifi!

S & W Gameday...Beatin' the Eagles

On Saturday, 9/23/17, we got to use our season tickets to take the boys to a game! It was finally a home game that we were in town for and not a night game. Yay! The boys had been talking about "going to the Tigers" for a while and I was so excited to be able to finally take them. They went to one game last year, but I feel like they are able to get much more out of the experience this year vs. last year.

Fifi and Jerry were in town from the previous week while I was in California for work travel, so they agreed to stay home and watch Ryan so that we could take Stokes and William go the game with us. It was a 3:30 game (PERFECT!!!!!) and we had a soccer game that morning. That was pretty cool because Fifi and Jerry came to the soccer game, got to watch the boys in action, then they took Ryan home with them and we left for Clemson. We grabbed some lunch on our way into Clemson and then had some time to tailgate and hang out before the game started.

SOOOO excited!

Go Tigers!

So the truth is...Stokes asked to go to the bathroom at least 4 times...in the first half! Our seats are way up high so it's hard to get up and down the stairs that many times. Plus, I hate walking in front of all the other people in our row so much. I know it's annoying. Stokes was also incredibly bored during the game and wouldn't sit still. Challenges!! After buying a frozen lemonade, Skittles, popcorn and a bunch of bottled waters, we left after halftime.

Boys doing what boys love - playing in the grass!

It was a full day with soccer and then straight to Clemson and all the fanfare with the game, we had two little sleepy guys on the drive home. Thomas and I listened to the game on the radio.

GranO's birthday pool party

GranO and Granddad were in town last month dog sitting for GranO's daughter, Dana Paige, and it just happened to be GranO's 80th birthday! GranO invited us all to Dana Paige's house on Saturday afternoon for a pool party. Our neighborhood pool closed after Labor Day weekend, so we hadn't had pool access for a little while. We were very excited to go for a few reasons: 1) we love celebrating birthdays; 2) GranO and Granddad were here YAY! and 3) a POOL!!!!

We ate, we swam, we watched football, we (didn't) nap....all lots of fun. Before she left for her trip, Dana Paige cooked us an incredible meal and GranO and I just basically had to put stuff in the oven or heat things up - easy peasy. How thoughtful of Dana Paige. :)

MaSha had been out of town that weekend but came over to have dinner with us that evening and we had a great little get together.

We loved spending time with family, especial with GranO on her big birthday!

Lunch in the gorgeous backyard! Everything looked like it was out of a magazine! *swoon*

Then some swimming/relaxing time. Thomas and I had swimsuits but realized that the water was way too cold for us! The cold water didn't bother the boys, though!

Gourmet dinner time! It was a beautiful evening to sit out by the pool and dine al fresco (my fave)

GranO's birthday cake!

It was a fun day and evening with some of our favorite people. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did, GranO! xoxo
